In Slovenia, we have finished case studies collection. Our newbie colleagues at the University of Ljubliana interviewed 10 new entrants in farming (newcomers and successors of farm), including farmers from all 5 macroregions in Slovenia (as you can see on the map) with different types of farm orientation (specialised and mixed farming), different farm size (1,5-78 ha), organizational and marketing approach. They comprise a wide range of ages, agricultural experience, and resource access. New entrants are primarily belonging to differentation (niche products and markets, like organic and biodynamic farming, on-farm processing, and direct sale) and diversification. On-farm (as well as off-farm) diversification can fill agricultural income gaps, which might occure due to new entrants’ comparable small farm sizes or too low financial revenue streams from primary production and marketing.
