Michael Stücke, shepherd from Westphalia, won the first Newbie Award in Germany. On May 8th the German project partners the University of Applied Sciences South Westphalia and the German Rural Youth Organization presented the award as part of an event from f3 farm.food.future.
Michael Stücke started as a lateral entrant in sheep farming with only 3 sheep as a hobby. By now he markets his products in an own farm shop. The special aspect: He does not only sell meat and sausages but also wool, fleece, carpets and even cosmetics from the sheep’s milk. This way the commodity is used almost completely. A successful example how innovative ideas and marketing concepts can help to increase the sustainability of the agricultural sector even more.
Furthermore the sheep are used to remain the nature reserves nearby open.
When asked, what other newbies can learn from him, Michael Stücke replied: “Our concept shows that diversity pays off. Special niches are required. When you are open to new things and reflect your work constantly, you can have a long-term profitable farm.“
