“When Newbies become Visible, Functioning and Participating Farmers!” was a title of presentation delivered by Slovenian partner (Irma Potočnik Slavič, Sara Uhan from University of Ljubljana) at European Network for Rural Development (ENRD) virtual Workshop for National Rural Networks on Valorising and Communicating Successful Projects. The virtual meeting (November 24, 2020) was dedicated to identifying the factors contributing to a successful project and added value of project; and to share lessons on valorising and communicating successful project. Nearly 80 participants from 24 countries joined an interactive whole day workshop, including panel presentations, in-time and chat discussions, several rounds of group discussions, sharing videos, etc.
The round table on project success factors and added value – identifying and communicating, with examples of Rural Network projects from Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Slovakia, France and Slovenia, was an opportunity to briefly present the NEWBIE working flow, from on-field identification of individuals, collecting data on business and entry models of new entrants with focus on several criteria, namely success factors (i.e. innovation, economic performance and social impact, how are they facing hurdles and potential for learning), setting up measures to stimulate networking (via Newbie network, national discussion circles and regular newsletter) and a Newbie Award call, informing and empowering new entrants with practical toolkits and providing data and evidences on newbies to decision makers.
In detail, added value of Newbie Award was discussed. From Slovenian perspective, we can confirm, that Newbie Award contributed to the general societal recognition of the newbies and a bit also in their positioning in farming sector – since the awards ceremonies in 2019 and 2020 were part of Slovenian Rural Parliament or of International conference on NEWBIEs. What is more, step-by-step we are co-creating the elements of supportive environment for new entrants – and we have been able to identify more newbies in practice.
We would like to thank to Slovenian Rural Network, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery to recognise NEWBIE project as a good example for Slovenian environment.
